mi Flight Tracker
Track flights, live status updates, record in flightbook.

  • Getting started

  • What does the app do?

The mi Flight Tracker app uses online data to provide status and track information for live flights. Once you have entered the flight details the app will automatically update the status and track information at regular intervals until the flight reaches the destination airport. Status information will include scheduled, estimated or actual departure and arrival times where the data is available. Track data will also show the scheduled flight plan filed by the pilot where this is available. You can record the flight in your flight book and then view a personalised map showing all your flight paths across the world. The app also shows total distance travelled and how many countries you have visted.

  • How do I add a flight?

In the main flight book screen you can add a flight by tapping the '+' button in the top right hand navigation bar. You can then search for a flight by either the flight number if this is known or by airport. If searching by flight number select the 'flight No.' row and insert the details. If searching by airport tap on the 'By route' button and add the departure and arrival airports. Please remember to add in the correct date of departure which is the local date not UTC date. Once all the details are entered tap the 'Search' button in the top right hand corner of the navigation bar and the app will search for the flight. If more than one flight is returned please select which ones you want to save and they will be saved to your flight book. If you wish you can just select the departure and destination date without searching for the flight, in this case no status updates or track information will be provided.

  • How do I see the map of all my flights?

In the main flight book screen tap the 'More' button in the bottom left hand toolbar. Select 'Go to map view' and your flights will be displayed on the map. In this view you can zoom to countries that you have visited, select which flights to show and also simulate selected flights together.

  • How do I see the map of my flight?

To see a map of the route of the flight select the flight from your flight book and then tap on the small world icon in the bottom right hand part of the view (for iPad uses the map is displayed permanently). The scheduled and actual flight route will be shown where available. Note in the absence of a flight plan being available then the app assumes a great circle shortest path between the airports.

  • How do I see a simulation of my flight?

In the map view of the selected flight tap on the small icon showing an arrow to move the map controls onto the screen. To simulate the flight tap the start icon and then select the simulation speed. Note that selecting real time takes you to a new view to select the take off time of the flight. Here you can set the take off to a particular time or a time to/from take off. This allows you to roughly track where you are on the flight. No tracking data is available once on board the flight with airplane mode switched on so the app relies on an in-built physics flight model to simulate the flight and give an estimate of position.

  • Can I track my flight whilst on the aircraft?

No, when the device is in airplane mode no track information is available to the app although you can see a simulation using a physics based model to get a rough estimate of location during the flight (see question above).

  • Can I change the display to show km instead of miles?

Yes, in the settings view you are able to toggle between metric and imperial units. Tap the button in the bottom right hand corner of the flight book view to access the settings view.

  • Can I switch to a satelite or hybrid map display?

Yes, in the settings view you can toggle between normal map, a satelite or a hybrid map display. Tap the button in the bottom right hand corner of the flight book view to access the settings view.

  • Can I share my flight details with friends?

Yes, select the flight you wish to share with friends and tap the button in the bottom right hand corner in the toolbar. This presents a menu of options where you can select to share with Facebook or Twitter social networks or via email. You will be able to share the status of a flight, a map of the route, or a map showing the entire flight book.

  • Can I save an archive of my flights?

Yes, select any flight from your flight book and tap the button in the bottom right hand corner in the toolbar. This presents a menu of options where you can select to share flight data either a single flight or the entire flight book. To archive the flight book select 'Email flightbook' and email the attachment to your self for archiving. To import the flight data just tap on the attachment in your phone or tablet and select which flights to import.

  • Can I export the flight data?

Yes, select the flight from your flight book and tap the button in the bottom right hand corner in the toolbar. This presents a menu of options where you can select to export to csv file. You will be given an option to export the entire flight book or just a single flight. The single flight option is only provided if a flight plan or track data is available, which will be exported as an email attachment.

  • Can I add an appointment to my calendar for my flight?

Yes, select the flight from your flight book and tap the button in the bottom right hand corner in the toolbar. This presents a menu of options where you can select create appointment.

  • FAQs

  • Why can't I search for historical flight data?

Data is only kept by our onlone data provider for one week. After this time historical flight tracks and data is unavailable.

  • Can I share data between iPhone and iPad using the cloud?

At the present time the app doesn't include this functionality but we are looking into adding this in to a future upgrade. To share data between iPhone and iPad you can archive the flight data (see guide above) and import it into the second device by tapping on the archive file in an email.

  • I can't find my flight using the flight number.

Please check the flight number is correct or change the airline code to either the IATA or ICAO code for the airline. Ensure that the date of departure is the correct local date. If you still can not find the flight you can try searching by route.

  • Can I link multi-legged flights?

Unfortunately this functionality is not currently available.

  • Are there any intenraional date line issues to be aware of?

When searching for flight you need to ensure that the date is the local airport date for the scheduled departure. For multi-legged flgihts that span the international date line you will need to ensure that this is taken into account when downloading each flight.

  • I have deleted the app, can I recover my flight data?

We don't store flight data on our servers. Unfortunately the only way to recover the app data would be from any back up you may have created. You can save the entire flight book and archive this yourself, see guide above.
